“It brings people together, it promotes tourism, and it helps building a stronger and more inclusive city.” “As the third-largest Pride parade celebration in the state, this is a huge asset to our community,” Allen said. The City Council unanimously approved the item. The 2023 Long Beach Pride Parade & Festival took place in August, but this year’s event will take place in May.Ĭindy Allen, who represents District 2, presented the motion to help Long Beach Pride at this week’s City Council meeting. Councilmembers Mary Zendejas (District 1) and Megan Kerr (District 5) co-sponsored the motion. Long Beach Pride, the nonprofit that organizes the city’s annual LGBTQ parade and festival, requested the city’s financial assistance because it’s in the process of rebuilding following setbacks from the COVID-19 pandemic and the death of several of its members - including co-founder Bob Crow, who died in September - and because there’s a quicker turnaround for this year’s event. City staffers will look into cost estimates and funding opportunities to help produce this year’s Long Beach Pride Parade - with Vice Mayor Cindy Allen putting $50,000 from her office’s discretionary funds toward the effort.
